Residential Household Hazardous Waste Service

Ever wondered what to do with those old batteries, leftover paints, or expired chemicals lurking in your garage? It’s more important than you might think to dispose of these items properly. Not only does it protect our environment and keep our communities safe, but it also ensures that we’re doing our part in creating a healthier planet.

We’re proud to offer our residential customers free, curbside pickup of approved household hazardous wastes (HHW).

Our residential customers may also drop off their HHW for free (some limitations apply) at the Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility in San Rafael.

How to schedule a residential pickup

Residential household hazardous waste collection must be scheduled in advance. You may email us at customer@millvalleyrefuse.com or call our office at (415) 457-9760 to schedule the pickup of your household hazardous waste.
Pickup need not be on the same day as your regular collection day.
There is no limit on the number of times you may use this service during the year.

ACCEPTED household hazardous waste

Household batteries (No car batteries. Batteries should be packaged in paper or ziplock plastic bags.)
Latex paint (Paint must be sealed in containers with original labels. Limit is three one-gallon cans on any one pickup.)
Used motor oil (Limit is three one-gallon cans on any one pickup.)
Oil filters
Fluorescent light bulbs (Under 4 feet in length only.)

BATTERY FIRE DANGER

DO NOT PLACE BATTERIES IN ANY OF YOUR CARTS OR BINS

Batteries — especially Lithium Ion batteries — are flammable hazardous waste and can cause fires and pose serious danger to people and machinery both during collection and at the processing facility.

You can safely drop off old batteries at the Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at 565 Jacoby Street in San Rafael.

Residential customers may also request a free Household Hazardous Waste pickup.

No MEDICAL WASTE

We do not collect medical waste or sharps of any kind

The Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility will accept a limited number of sharps in designated sharps containers from Marin County residents. They do not accept medicine.

To properly dispose of prescription drugs, sharps, etc. in Marin, please refer to information on the County of Marin’s website or call Marin County Environmental Health Services at (415) 473-9607.

Treated Wood Is Hazardous Waste

Treated Wood Waste (TWW) comes from wood treated with chemical preservatives, often identified by green or dark brown coloring and staple marks. TWW may be used in decking, fence posts, landscape timbers and guardrails to name a few.

As of January 1, 2021, waste haulers in the County of Marin cannot accept TWW at their facilities, in their debris boxes, and in the garbage, recycling, or composting bins as treated wood is now considered hazardous waste.

FREE HHW DROP-OFF SITE

Marin residents may drop off household hazardous waste at the Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility in San Rafael free of charge. Some amount limitations per trip may apply and a photo ID is required to verify where you live. Residents may go at any time during regular business hours.
