TIPPING YOUR COLLECTOR

If you would like to tip your collectors, please do not leave a gift out where it can be the target of thieves. If you feel comfortable, you may hand your gift directly to them.

You may also send your check, cash, or package to our office. Click here for information about where and how to send your gift.

Keep It Safe, Light, and Clean!

DO NOT PUT BATTERIES IN ANY OF YOUR CARTS OR BINS!

Batteries—especially Lithium Ion batteries—are flammable hazardous waste and can cause fires, posing serious risks to people and machinery during collection and at processing facilities.

You can safely drop off old batteries at the Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility, located at 565 Jacoby Street in San Rafael. Visit marinhhw.com for
details.

Residential customers may also request a free Household Hazardous Waste pickup by calling our office at (415) 457-9760.

We lift every cart by hand. please don’t overload THEM!

Keep each cart under 60 pounds to avoid breakage and reduce the risk of injury for our collectors. Overloaded carts can also lead to costly replacements. If you’re cramming yard waste into the green cart, it’s likely too full. Please keep it light and safe — we appreciate it!

BREAKDOWN YOUR CARDBOARD BOXES

Get in the habit of flattening boxes — it’ll free up space in your recycling cart. If they still don’t fit, bundle them up (max 4 feet x 4 feet x 1 foot), tie with twine, and leave them by your cart. We’ll handle the rest!

CURBSIDE CLEANUPS

Residents get a few free curbside cleanups per year. Schedule ahead, and we’ll pick up to three cubic yards of extra waste on your pickup day — perfect for spring cleaning!

Details vary by location, so check out our Residential Curbside Cleanup page for details about your town/city.

CALIFORNIA’S SB 1383: A REMINDER TO SORT FOR A GREENER FUTURE

Mill Valley Refuse Compost Cart

Since 2022, California’s SB 1383 law has been helping to keep food and other compostable materials out of landfills. This law requires all waste generators—businesses, public agencies, and
residents in both single and multifamily homes—to sort their
waste properly. Here’s what you need to know:

  • ORGANICS: Place food, food-soiled paper, and plant debris in your green compost cart.
  • RECYCLABLES: Sort paper, cardboard, cans, and bottles into your recycling cart(s).

The good news? Mill Valley Refuse has included compost, recycling, and garbage collection as part of your regular service for years. All you need to do is keep sorting your waste correctly to make a difference for our community and environment!
